Reath, the Edinburgh-based circular economy startup, has been awarded a grant by the UK government, UK Research and Innovation fund. The grant was awarded as part of the Business Disruption and response to COVID-19 fund, an initiative designed to apply technology and skillsets of leading UK startups to tackle the challenges that COVID-19 has presented.
As authors of “reuse.id”, the first global Open Data Standard for reusable packaging, Reath will apply their technology and Data Standard approach to develop a system for safe reuse of PPE in medical environments. The team will interview and consult with medical providers, sanitation experts, PPE designers and manufacturers to develop the service model.
Co-Founder of Reath, Emily Rogers, said:
“With the onset of COVID-19, we’ve seen the progress we’ve made on progressive environmental measures take a back seat to our health and safety. I think we can all understand why this call was made, but when we emerge from this pandemic, our planet will still be facing the same problems it was beforehand. Ensuring that health and safety is not sacrificed while implementing sustainable circular models is what Reath was founded on, and we are excited to tackle the challenge that PPE presents to us.”
The scheme is expected to pilot in by end of 2020.
