The challenge
Bower Collective is a UK-based startup offering products in reusable packaging, and backed by Reckitt Benckiser, a multinational consumer goods company. They are targeting the increasingly large environmentally-conscious consumer market, and were looking for a solution to handle the traceability of their reusable packaging, as well as accurately track their impact. Bower Collective launched new packaging that was specially designed for reuse, with Reath engaged to power the digital infrastructure of the system. As the refill process was designed to be automated and serving hundreds of thousands of customers, we call this "refill at scale"; demonstrating what a next-generation, world-leading reuse system can look like.
What we did
- QR code trackers are printed onto the reusable pouches at point of manufacture.
- When the pouches are filled on a filling line, the automatic scanner "stamps" its passport and logs the product & batch data in the Reath system.
- Customers can scan the QR code to see how many times the packaging has been used, and what product/batch is inside the pouch.
- Bower uses the data to grow, scale safely and optimise reuse/refill.
The results
- Plug & play traceability solution — all scanner integrations provided.
- Secure API feed for serving up environmental & product information to consumers.
- More accurate environmental reporting.
- A real-time datafeed of the packaging lifecycle.
- Easy setup across multiple 3rd party partners (e.g. filling plants, dispatch etc).
- Improved insight — which customers are / are not returning packaging for refill & demographic targeting.
